The most interesting and important of all early chess pieces are those which have come to be known as the "Lewis Chessmen". The pieces were found in 1831 in an underground chamber on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis.
As seen in Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, an Isle of Lewis set was used as the wizards chess set in the movie.

This richly carved set is a duplicate of a 14th Century German set. The back of the King's throne depicts warriors, the Queen's throne ladies in waiting and the Bishop's throne holy men and musicians. In the Rook can be seen the beginnings of the introduction of the castle into early European chess.
The king is approximate 10.5cm tall.
